A master watercolorist, Peter Chope (1939-2013) rendered scenes of nature that are vibrant yet soothing. He would mix small pots of transparent watercolors and pour the paint directly onto the 300-pound paper, later adding detail with the brush. This Sierra Nevada scene of Monitor Pass is framed as a companion painting to “Monitor Walk,” also in today’s auction. Framed and matted, ready to hang.
At 10,014 feet, Raymond Peak is the third highest peak in the Mokelumne Wilderness, which straddles the Pacific Crest between Ebbetts Pass and Carson Pass. Watercolorist Ray Chope lived in Markleeville and knew the area very well. He used rich colors to portray the fall aspens, with the favorite climbing destination in the background.
